Research Led

Our faculty are active researchers. Their research underpins their teachings to ensure our students are exposed to fresh ideas and current understandings.  Our learning experiences are characterised by inquiry, critical analysis and theoretical underpinnings.  As a consequence our graduates are better equipped to engage with and to lead changes in the theory and practice of their chosen disciplines.

Examples of living Research Led:

  • Highest per capita level of PhD qualified teaching staff of any New Zealand business school
  • Original case studies researched and written for classroom teaching
  • All papers offered in the School link to faculty research and expertise ensuring student access and awareness of faculty research

Practice Relevant

We espouse the 'active learning' paradigm, in which teachers are facilitators of learning, and students and teachers are engaged in a joint process of discovery.  Using a variety of teaching approaches, students participate in group work, case studies, interactive discussions and experiential learning.  Practical learning experiences are incorporated throughout our undergraduate degrees.

Management Based

We are a management school, incorporating the best of a world class business school, with an emphasis on people and performance.  We are committed to sustainable success in all enterprises and organisations, including public sector, not-for-profit and community organisations.  We teach management skills beyond the functional disciplines of business enabling our graduates to rise through the ranks rapidly to senior positions.

Examples of living Management Based:

  • Our students gain a comprehensive understanding of management across all functions and areas of business, organisations and society
  • The Waikato Management School has developed a unique eLearning based Social Enterprise postgraduate diploma and an associated masters subject. The School has a significant research agenda and PhD programme in social enterprise, community organisation and not-for-profit management.
  • All students graduate with a track record of contributing meaningfully to organisational success and strengthening the sustainable future of communities

Interdisciplinary

Our graduates have an understanding of a broad range of management theories and competency in developing, evaluating and critiquing management presentations and reports.  Through their engagement in integrated, planned programmes of study, they extend their skills and develop intellectual curiosity.

Examples of living Interdisciplinary:

E-supported

E-education enables academic staff to align technologies with curriculum objectives.  Staff are encouraged to generate their own ideas, think creatively with respect to technology and collaborate within a team to ensure electronic support and delivery of papers.

Examples of living E-supported:

  • Internationally acknowledged web support systems - MyWebTM, which is a personalised portal linking programmes of study, research and people
  • All papers are web supported and every paper offered in the School has its own website.  Students access paper outlines and content, assignment information and marks, together with class email facility and online communication tools
  • Selected programmes are fully online and some programmes are delivered electronically in collaboration with corporate partners
