About our Department

The Department of Economics is one of the top economics departments in New Zealand, having ranked third in the most recent Performance-Based Research Funding (PBRF) rankings. Our department is also ranked in the top 8 percent of all economics research institutions worldwide, according to RePEc.

The Department of Economics has high quality research active staff, many of whom have won awards for research and/or teaching thereby demonstrating our excellence.

Our undergraduate and postgraduate students enjoy research-informed teaching and high quality research supervision. Graduates from the Department of Economics have gone on to rewarding careers at a number of public sector organisations (including reasury, Reserve Bank, Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Social Development, MAF Policy, Environment Waikato, etc.) and private sector organisations (Fonterra, General Motors, Telecom, etc.).
