UNWTO

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is an agency of the United Nations (see http://www.unwto.org/). As such it has undertaken a number of key initiatives that relate to pro-poor tourism and concerns of longer term sustainability.

One component of UNWTO work is conducted through the Themis Foundation and is asssociated with tourism education quality. The Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management has been subjected to the accreditation processes of the Foundation and has been assessed with reference to the quality of its curriculum, research, and liaison with various stakeholders including links with government, industry, communities and non-governmental organisations. The Department was awarded accreditation for the maximum four year period with effect from June 2010.

This means that students can enrol on the B.Tour degree confident that staff are knowledgeable about tourism as both an industry and social phenomenon with environmental impacts, and that they are knowledgeable about the means by which industry and its impacts may be managed - a knowledge that is sustained through active research, links with industry and an active doctoral degree programme.
