Law Firm Practice Comparison - How Does Your Practice Measure Up?

The Law Firm Practice Comparison has been conducted in association with the NZ Law Society for over 25 years. In this time the Comparison has become a trusted source of information for practice comparison and improvement.

The 2011 Comparison has been published and participating firms received their individual reports at the beginning of December 2011.

PERFORMANCE MEASURES

The comparison allows you to benchmark your practice's results against similar practices. Principals can compare key financial and non-financial indicators with participating practices allowing them to identify strengths and weaknesses within their practice. It provides essential information for management decisions, budgeting, and goal setting.

This survey will provide your practice with valuable information including the following KPIs:

  • Net Profit per Equity Partner
  • Gross Income per Equity Partner
  • Hours Charged per Year
  • Billing Efficiency
  • Staff Turnover
  • Charge-Out Rates
  • Expenses as a % of Gross Income
  • Source of Fees
  • Gross Income per Staff Member
  • Staff per Fee Earner/Principal

In addition to the above financial information, various practice policies and characteristics are also surveyed to provide you a useful view of, and insights into, how other firms have structured their practice.

INDIVIDUALISED REPORTS

By participating, your firm will be provided with a comprehensive and individualised report revealing how your firm's performance compares with other practices including those with a similar income level, location, number of principals, incorporation of firm, source of fees and Legal Aid income.

PAST REPORTS

This comparison is conducted every two years.  If you would like information about purchasing the 2011, 2009 or earlier reports, please contact the Management Research Centre.
