Transportation
Hamilton is located on the North Island of New Zealand, 125 kilometers south of Auckland.
International visitors from outside Australasia are advised to fly to Auckland International Airport. There are direct flights from North America (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver) offered by Air New Zealand, United Airlines, Quantas, and Air Pacific. From Europe and Asia there are numerous options, including Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Emirates, etcera.
It pays to book in time (e.g., in August 2008) since the conference (4-6 January 2009) is in the middle of New Zealand Summer. Since this is a very popular period for international tourists, airfares tend to rise quickly as time progresses.
Some tips to economize on airfares:
- The lowest airfares from the U.S. to New Zealand (less then US$ 1,400 from L.A.) are offered by www.airpacific.com. The only "downside" is that it makes a stop on Fiji.
- Good websites to book tickets from the Netherlands are www.wereldtickets.nl and www.cheaptickets.nl.
- Good websites for tickets from Belgium are www.joker.be, www.connections.be and www.aussietours.be.
- From Istanbul, www.emirates.com flies you for less than Euro 1,300 to Auckland and back.

From Auckland International Airport you can book a direct shuttle to Hamilton (1.5 hour one way). The fare is about NZ$70 (one way) per person, or less if the booking is for three or more persons. The two (equally reliable and similarly priced) options are: http://www.minibus.co.nz/ and http://www.roadcat.co.nz/.
Alternatively, you rent a car at Auckland International Airport. Remember that in New Zealand we drive on the left-hand side of the road.
Visitors from within Australasia can also consider flying to Hamilton International Airport as there are direct flights to all major New Zealand cities and to Brisbane and Sydney, and take a taxi into town (12 kilometers). |
